Volleyball rolls to a 3-1 win over Mercer

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU offense erupted on Saturday as four players recorded double figures in kills, with three getting double-doubles, as the Dolphins produced a 3-1 win over Mercer in Atlantic Sun Conference play.

Eva Stoilova recorded a season-high 25 kills to go along with 11 digs for her second straight double-double. Petya Borisova had 15 kills and 16 digs while Katie Hendrian had 14 kills and 14 digs.

Setter Amanda Youell dished out a season-high 64 assists while Shelley Walroth picked up a match-high 29 digs to lead the JU defense. Melissa Merchant had 10 kills in the win.

For the match, JU (11-11, 3-2 A-Sun) had 75 kills and a .303 hitting percentage. Defensively, the Dolphins racked up 13 blocks, putting up double figures in blocks for the fifth straight match.

"We did a solid job on defense and that gave our offense some momentum in transition," said JU head coach Shaun Kupferberg. "I'm pleased with how we played today and anytime you can pick up two conference wins it's a good weekend."

The Dolphins opened up with a 30-24 win in game one, putting together a solid offense performance with 19 kills, seven by Hendrian and six by Stoilova. JU took control of the game late, turning a 24-20 lead into a 28-20 lead as the Dolphins eased to the early lead.

JU racked up another 18 kills in the second game, racing out to a 29-25 lead before holding on for a 30-28 win. The Dolphins put up 18 kills, with Merchant getting five.

Game three turned out to be barn burner as JU rallied from a 28-20 deficit to tie the game at 29. The Mercer offense put together its best effort, getting 24 kills in the game, as they forced game four with a 33-31 win.

The Dolphins turned a close game into a rout midway through the final game. JU was clinging to a two-point lead, 16-14, and finished the game by scoring 14 of the final 15 points to seal the match with a 30-15 win.

JU put up 20 kills in the fourth game and committed just one error to finish with a .559 hitting percentage in the game.

Julie Darty led three Bears in kills with 18 while Liz Kane had 23 digs. Setter Kelly Jansen had 53 assists.

The Dolphins are back in action on Wednesday as they hit the road to face Bethune-Cookman.
