Volleyball falls in four to Belmont
Nov. 4, 2006
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Belmont had five players record double figures in kills as the Bruins knocked off the JU volleyball team, 3-1, to wrap up the Atlantic Sun Conference regular season schedule.
The Dolphins (14-13, 5-4 A-Sun) were led by Eva Stoilova's 13 kills and 15 digs, while Shelley Walroth had a match-high 27 digs. Stevenique Richardson added 10 kills for JU while Melissa Merchant had eight blocks.
The Bruins (21-6, 8-1) got 21 kills from Katie Tobiasz along with 14 apiece from Emily Cahill and Cat Mundy. Setter Colleen Nilson dished out 68 assists and had 17 digs while Ashley Collier had a team-high 26 digs for Belmont.
"We really didn't execute well on offense and that hurt us all day," said JU head coach Shaun Kupferberg. "We've just played two of the top teams in the conference and we know what we need to work on before we come up here again in two weeks for the tournament."
The JU offense didn't get off to a rousing start with just 11 kills in falling 30-21 in game one. The Bruins pounded out 20 kills and hit .326 for the game in taking the early lead.
JU battled back with strong defense and some offense to take game two, 35-33. The Dolphins fought off three game points to snag the win after holding Belmont to a .116 hitting percentage.
Game three saw a focused Belmont effort as the Bruins cruised to a 30-13 win. JU had only seven kills in the game while committing seven attack errors in the process. Belmont took advantage, racking up 19 kills as well.
The fourth game saw was a see-saw affair similar to Friday's match against Lipscomb, with Belmont icing the match with a 30-28 win. With the game tied at 28, the Bruins tallied the final two points of the match, the last coming on a kill by Tobiasz.
JU returns home for Senior Day on Thursday against UNF. First serve is set for 7:30 p.m.
