Women’s tennis sweeps through Nashville
Despite dreary conditions, the JU women’s tennis team swept through Music City this weekend, topping Lipscomb and Belmont in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
The Dolphins (7-6, 3-1 A-Sun) extended their season-best winning streak to three after a 7-0 win over Lipscomb on Friday and a 4-2 win that ran past midnight on Saturday over Belmont. “These were two really good wins this weekend,” said JU head coach Shane Wood. “The weather wasn’t the best, but we were able to fight through it to get two wins on the road.” The trip started with the Dolphins sweeping Lipscomb with an impressive 7-0 win. JU won all three doubles matches and all six singles matches, with five of the wins in straight sets. Iva Jaresova won a three-set thriller in a tiebreaker, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4). Against Belmont, JU battled to win the doubles point. Tatiana Soldatova and Elvira Yusupova won the No. 1 match, 9-7, with Jaresova and Virginia Iwinski winning the No. 3 match, 9-7. Fernanda Carrero and Juliana Umeki just missed out on making it a JU sweep, dropping the No. 2 match in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-5). The singles matches were a battle, with the match ending at 1 a.m., as two matches went three sets. The Dolphins got their first two wins in straight sets as Carrero won the No. 6 match, 6-2, 6-3, while Soldatova took home a 7-5, 6-3 win in the No. 1 match. Yusupova clinched the win for JU with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory in the No. 2 match. The Dolphins return to the court on Friday as they host Mercer at 10 a.m. |
