Dolphins picked to finish sixth in Pioneer Football League coaches poll
The coaches in the Pioneer Football League have picked JU to finish sixth this season as the preseason poll was released on Wednesday.
The Dolphins are slotted to finish in the same spot they did a year ago in the now nine-team league.
“Preseason polls are based on where you finished last year, the kids you have coming back and tradition,” said JU head coach Kerwin Bell. “We finished sixth last year, so it’s no surprise that we are picked where we are. I believe our guys will use this as motivation to strive for more this season.”
San Diego, the defending co-champion, is picked to win the league again after receiving two of the eight possible first place votes and a total of 58 points. The other co-champion from a year ago, Dayton, took home second with three first place votes and 55 points.
San Diego is seeking at least a share of its third straight league title while Dayton is seeking to build off its impressive win in the Gridiron Classic last season.
Davidson is picked to finish third with three first place votes and 51 points. Morehead State received one first place vote and was picked fourth in the poll.
Drake is picked to take home fifth, followed by JU, a tie between Butler and Valparaiso for seventh and first-year program Campbell picked ninth.
”There is a lot of talent in this league and the results of the poll show how close the league is,” Bell said. “I know it sounds cliché, but anyone can step up and beat you on any given day. This league is very deep talent-wise while getting better and better each year.”
HEATED PRACTICE: The Dolphins went back to work on Wednesday for two hours in shells while battling 100 degree temperatures and a heat index that was even higher.
“It was really hot out there today,” Bell said. “We got a lot of work done though and the kids were mentally focused on what they needed to do, which was good to see in conditions like this.”
