Elliott Finkley earns honorable mention All-America honors
Sophomore Elliott Finkley was named honorable mention All-America as a punt return as the Sports Network All-America teams were announced on Wednesday.
Finkley, a native of Jacksonville who played his high school ball at Fletcher, averaged 15.67 yards per punt return in his first season and was tied for the national lead in punt returns for touchdowns with three.
“Having a player of Elliott’s caliber returning punt gives us a gamechanger in our special teams unit,” said JU head coach Kerwin Bell. “Every time a team punted the ball, they were holding their breath because they knew there was a chance he could return it for a touchdown.”
Finkley’s All-America campaign started when he returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown against then-No. 1 ranked Appalachian State.
He followed that up the next week with a 57-yard return for a touchdown against Campbell.
He broke the school record for punt return touchdowns in a season in the regular season finale, returning a punt 54 yards in the fourth quarter to ignite JU’s rally past Dayton to win the Pioneer Football League title, 19-14.
