Men’s soccer travels to Georgia Southern on Sunday
After having full a week of practice, the JU men’s soccer team is looking forward to getting back on the pitch this Sunday as the Dolphins face Georgia Southern on Sunday at 3 p.m.

This is the first meeting between the two schools since the 2006 season when the Dolphins (2-4) earned a 3-1 victory over the Eagles (1-3) in the home finale at the Ashley Sports Complex.

“Another road trip,” said JU head coach Mike Johnson. “Hopefully this will prepare us for the Atlantic Sun stretch that we take on in October and with the conference tournament being on the road in Buies Creek.

“Georgia Southern is a scrappy team and was ranked in the region at one point following their win at Clemson. They are athletic, big and are probably going to be tough at home. Hopefully, we can recreate last weekend’s performance, and if we can do that, then we can come out with a good result.”

JU split a pair of matches last weekend in the adidas/Gamecock Classic to open a season-long seven-match road trip. The Dolphins opened the classic by shutting out Presbyterian, 3-0, on Sept. 12. Senior midfielder Ramak Niakan safi scored two of the goals and assisted the third en route to earning A-Sun Offensive “Player of Week” honors.

The Dolphins outshot host South Carolina, but the Gamecocks scored two goals in the final 10 minutes to steal a 2-0 win on Sept. 14.

Niakan safi, junior defender Stefan Runeman and sophomore forward Tony Taylor each have scored two goals to pace the team offensively. Senior forward Sebastian Lindholm and sophomore forward Wesley Lartey have also notched a goal, while senior goalie Joey Sanchez has both wins between the posts for the Dolphins.

Like the Dolphins, the Eagles look to get back into the win column after losing a 1-0 affair to UNF on Sept. 17 at Eagles Field. Currently, senior forward Daniel Smith leads the team in scoring with two goals and four points.
