Men’s soccer downs Stetson, 4-1
Sophomore forward Tony Taylor scored two of the Dolphins’ four goals to help lead the JU men’s soccer team past Stetson, 4-1, on Friday night in Atlantic Sun action at the Stetson Soccer Complex.
Senior defender Philipp Meyner also scored a goal and recorded an assist, while sophomore forward Nedim Hrustic added a late goal to help the Dolphins (7-7, 4-1) put the match out of reach. Senior goalie Joey Sanchez made five saves between the nets for JU.
“We needed to rebound from last weekend and our team did that tonight,” said JU head coach Mike Johnson. “We came out and matched them with intensity. Our team responded big, which lead to a big result. It was a great win and hopefully we can carry this success over against Florida Gulf Coast.”
The Hatters (4-5-2, 1-2-1) lead initially on a goal from freshman midfielder Gonzalo de Mujica in the 20th minute on an assist from senior midfielder Kirk Labusch.
Meyner tied the match less than four minutes later with his first goal of the season on assists from senior forward Sebastian Lindholm and junior defender Oliver Klingenstein.
Following the game-tying goal, Mujica had a breakaway attempting to get the lead back for the Hatters, but Sanchez stopped him in his tracks to swing the momentum back to JU.
Taylor carried that momentum into the 36-minute when he blasted a shot from 25-yards out that slued past a diving senior Marc Galizia in goal to give JU a 2-1 advantage.
Taylor put the Dolphins up 3-1 early into the second half after he scored his fourth goal of the season in the lower left corner of the net against an outstretched Galizia.
In the 74th minute, Hrustic scored in the right side off a free kick by Meyner to wrap the JU scoring.
Galizia finished the night with three saves in the loss, while freshman goalie Logan Porter made one stop in seven minutes for Stetson.
The Dolphins finish the trip in Ft. Myers, Fla. on Sunday as they face Florida Gulf Coast in an A-Sun matchup at 1 p.m.
