Men’s soccer shuts out Florida Gulf Coast, 2-0
After the Eagles scored a program-record seven goals on Oct. 17, the JU men’s soccer team held Florida Gulf Coast scoreless for a 2-0 victory in Atlantic Sun conference action on Sunday afternoon in Ft. Myers, Fla.

The Dolphins (8-7, 5-1) limited the Eagles (3-9-1, 1-4) to only six shots in the match to finish the weekend undefeated. JU also improved its conference road record to a perfect 4-0 as well.

“This was a good end to a great weekend,” said JU head coach Mike Johnson. “We knew we had our hands full with the way Florida Gulf Coast played a day ago, but our defense rose to the occasion. I’m also proud of the way that Remmy and Nedim contributed off the bench. Overall, this was a great team win and we hope to keep this rolling.”

Less than eight minutes into the match, senior midfielder Ramak Niakan Safi scored his fourth goal of the season on a pass from sophomore forward Tony Taylor to give the Dolphins a 1-0 advantage. Taylor finished the weekend with a team-high five points to help the JU cause.

The Dolphins defense followed the goal by holding the Eagles to only five shots for the rest of the match. Senior goalie Joey Sanchez knocked down four of the attempts to record his fourth shutout of the season.

In the 86th minute, the Dolphins got an insurance goal on sophomore forward Nedim Hrustic’s second score of the weekend from a pass by senior forward Sebastian Lindholm to secure the win.

Eagles’ sophomore goalie Adam Glick made four saves between the nets in the loss.

The Dolphins wrap their regular-season road schedule on Sunday, Oct. 26, when they head to face cross-town and A-Sun rival UNF at 7 p.m. JU will be looking to get a gain a point in the Fourth annual SunTrust River City Rumble standings and to regain the Dennis Violett Memorial Cup.
