Senior goalie Joey Sanchez named Atlantic Sun Defensive “Player of the Week”
Senior goalie Joey Sanchez was named Atlantic Sun Defensive “Player of the Week” after being as solid as a stone wall in two wins for the JU men’s soccer team last week.

The Houston native posted nine saves, a shutout and a 0.50 goals against average to lead the Dolphins (8-7, 5-1) to road wins over Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast. JU has now won the last seven of eight A-Sun road matches dating back to last season.

“This honor is well-deserved,” said JU head coach Mike Johnson. “We have been fortunate this season to have two quality goalkeepers between the nets. Joey has been a great leader since the start of camp. Our success recently has been due to his play and quality leadership.”

Sanchez opened the two-match road trip with five saves in JU’s 4-1 win at Stetson on Oct. 17. He also made a key save on a breakaway, with the game tied, which would later help lead to JU’s game-winning goal by Taylor.

On Oct. 19, Sanchez combined with the Dolphins backline limited Florida Gulf Coast to six shots in a 2-0 win after the Eagles scored a program-record seven goals two days prior.

Sanchez currently has a 0.89 GAA, which is second in the A-Sun and is first on the JU single-season lists.

The Dolphins wrap their regular-season road schedule on Sunday, when they face cross-town and A-Sun rival UNF at 7 p.m. JU will be looking to gain a point in the SunTrust River City Rumble standings and to regain the Dennis Violett Memorial Cup.
