Men’s tennis ranked eighth in A-Sun preseason coaches’ poll
The JU men’s tennis team has been slated to finish eighth by the coaches of the Atlantic Sun in their annual preseason poll. With five freshmen expected to make contributions this season, the Dolphins will look to find leadership from their two seniors, Jaime Esteban and Victor Vaz.

“We lost a lot of key players from last year so we’re going to have a very young team this season,” said JU head coach Shane Wood. “I’ve never put a lot of stock in preseason rankings because you still have 20-plus matches to play. Our goal is to get better with every match and hopefully be a factor at the end of the season. Where we begin is not nearly as important as where we finish.”

ETSU took the preseason number one spot with 118 points (eight first place votes), followed by a two-way tie for second between USC Upstate and Stetson (102, 1). Outside the top three are UNF (88, 1), Belmont (73), Campbell (72), Mercer (44), Jacksonville, (41), FGCU (38), Kennesaw State (27) and Lipscomb (21).

Campbell snatched the preseason player of the year nod with junior Davy Sum.

The Dolphins open up their 2010 season at Florida A&M on Jan. 30 with their home opener against Bethune-Cookman on Feb. 24.
