JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

A-Sun Release

After winning the program's second Atlantic Sun Championship last fall, the JU women's soccer team was picked to finish third in the 2007 A-Sun preseason coaches poll while junior forward Keri Zwikker was selected Most Valuable Player and junior defender Katie Orr was named to the preseason all-conference team.

Kennesaw State, who fell to the Dolphins in the semifinals on the conference tournament, was selected to finish first with 142 points (10 first-place votes). Stetson took the second spot with 121 points (one first-place vote), while the Dolphins, East Tennessee State and Mercer rounded out the top five. Gardner-Webb, who received the only other first-place vote, North Florida, Campbell, Belmont, newcomers Florida Gulf Coast and USC Upstate and Lipscomb rounded out the rest of the field, respectively.

"Everything is up to speculation in the preseason poll because no one has seen each other yet," said JU head coach Chris Kouns. "We are very pleased to be selected third in the poll but the true test will come in November when everything counts."

Zwikker, who becomes the inaugural conference preseason MVP, is a two-time first team all-conference selection and was named "Freshman of the Year" by the conference in 2005. In two years with the Dolphins, she has tallied 24 goals and racked up 61 points in 43 career games.

"It's a great honor to be voted by the conference coaches, but I look at this as a reflection of what we have accomplished as a team," said Zwikker. "Right now, I'm just looking forward to starting preseason camp and getting a chance to mesh with my teammates, both new and old, as we build off of last season's success."

Orr, who moved to the backline last season after serving as a midfielder in 2005, went on to earn second team all-conference honors. A catalyst to a Dolphin defense that recorded eight shutouts on the year, Orr also earned conference "Defensive Player of the Week" honors on Sept. 18.

JU, which begins fall practice on Friday, opens the 2007 season at the Ashley Sports Complex on Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. against Presbyterian.
