Women's soccer beats Coastal Carolina 2-1
Sept. 9, 2007
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU women's soccer team registered a 2-1 win over Coastal Carolina Sunday in the Kick Out Cancer Tournament at the Ashley Sports Complex.
Freshman midfielder Sian Senior was the hero, scoring the game-winner in the 57th minute with a blast from over 20 yards out after some good passing by junior forward Keri Zwikker and sophomore midfielder Jaime Kuykendall.
"I was very pleased with the fact that we gutted out a tough game today," said head coach Chris Kouns. "We were a little banged up from the Baylor game, but we pulled out a win."
The Dolphins opened the scoring in the 16th minute after Zwikker received a long ball from freshman forward Emme Graham and sent a through ball to freshman midfielder Tamara Cormier, who fired the ball past the Chanticleer's goalie Britt Pecora on the breakaway.
Coastal Carolina equalized in the 21st minute from a long-range effort by junior midfielder Ashleigh Gunning.
"It is still a little troubling that we are letting leads slip away from us," Kouns said. "But the fact that we keep on battling and are finding ways to be in positions to win is a plus.
Freshman goalkeeper Lorna Brownlie made six saves for the Dolphins, earning her second victory of the season.
"Hopefully competing against well coached and prepare teams like Coastal will get us ready as we take one more step towards the conference schedule."
The other game of the Kick Out Cancer Tournament saw Baylor beat Stetson by the score of 3-1, making Baylor the only team to go undefeated in the tournament.
The Dolphins will be on the road on Friday at 7:30 p.m., taking on the College of Charleston in the College of Charleston Tournament in Charleston, S.C.
