Women's soccer opens A-Sun schedule with a 2-0 shutout over USC Upstate
Sept. 28, 2007
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The women's soccer team opened their A-Sun schedule Friday night with a 2-0 shutout over USC Upstate at the Hodge Center.
"We're very excited to start the conference season with not only a win, but a shutout," said JU head coach Chris Kouns. "We knew going in that our preconference schedule was designed to prepare us and push us for this. We feel a little justification that it prepared us for the tonight's good result. I am very pleased with our performance. We created a lot of opportunities and hit the post three times."
A long ball by freshmen midfielder Devon Dowell was one-timed across goal by Graham to Zwikker, who headed past the Spartans goalie in just the fourth minute of play.
Zwikker's second goal came in the 68th minute, when she fired home from six yards out after Graham passed her the ball following senior midfielder Emilie Howland's corner kick.
Freshmen goalkeeper Lorna Brownlie made six saves in her first career shutout. The defense consisting of Dowell, junior Katie Orr, freshman Sian Senior, and senior Louisa Ward allowed the Bulldogs to take just 10 shots the whole game.
"Lorna played well and we got the shutout," Kouns said. "We are halfway to our goal for the weekend. If we can come with another good effort on Sunday and work just as hard on the defensive side of the ball, it would be ideal to start off the conference.
"ETSU is a really tough opponent, you look at their record and the success they have, and it is not going to be an easy job by any means."
The Dolphins will continue their conference schedule on Sunday, taking on East Tennessee State at 1 p.m in Johnson City, Tenn.
