Women's soccer wraps up spring season

April 5, 2008

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU women's soccer team wrapped up their spring schedule on Saturday with a 2-2 draw against Armstrong Atlantic State at the Ashley Sports Complex.

Freshman Jelena Vrcelj tied the game at 2-2 late in the second half, as she fired a low drive into the bottom left hand corner after running through on goal following a pin point pass from junior defender Stephanie Kormanik.

"I thought we came out and played with intensity," said JU head coach Brian Copham. "We have been working on attacking in training and you could see some of those things coming out in the game, our forwards did a good job creating chances to score goals."

Junior forward Keri Zwikker opened the scoring for the Dolphins as she slotted home a pass by freshman midfielder Emme Graham.

"Defensively we looked much better than we did the week before," Copham said. "We knew AASU wouldn't make it easy, Eric has done a good job and they are a well coached team."

The Dolphins earned two hard-fought 0-0 draws in 45 minute games against South Florida and North Florida earlier in the spring, before last weekends 3-0 defeat to Stetson.

"We played a wide variety of teams this spring," said Copham. "We started to learn how important consistency is and what it takes for us to be successful day in and day out. Our effort and work rate has improved throughout the spring and we have gotten more organized each game we have played. The girls have done some good work this spring getting ready for next fall, we still have things to work on but we have definitely taken steps in the right direction heading into the new season."
