Women’s golf tied for ninth after first round of the Xavier Invitational
Meghan Hughes’ posted a four-over par 76 to lead the JU women’s golf team in the first round of the Xavier Invitational on the Legends Course at LPGA International.

The Dolphins carded a 22-over par round of 310 to tie for ninth with Samford, trailing tournament leader Daytona State by 15 shots in the 15-team event.

“We didn’t play as well as we liked, but we still had a good day,” said JU head coach Mike Blackburn. “We’ve got two more days, so we’ll see if we can’t go out and shoot a little bit better each day.”

Lamar’s Linda Persson and Campbell’s Teresa Urquizu lead the individual competition after shooting two-under par, 70, in the opening round. Six players shot par or better on the day.

Hughes had the best round for JU, going out in 38 and coming back in 38 for a 76. She is tied for 20th in the individual competition at four-over par.

Freshman Francesca Yong and senior Paige Gifford each shot a five-over par round of 77 to tie for 28th. Yong had a 38 on the front and a 39 on the back nine, while Gifford was out in 39 and shot 38 on the back nine.

Melissa Magdor carded an eight-over par 80 to count towards the team score, making the turn at three-over par before shooting a 41 on the back nine. She is tied for 52nd.

Kristen Boettcher shot a 12-over par 84 in the opening round, shooting 43 on the front nine before posting a 41 on the back nine to tie for 74th.

The Dolphins will tee off their second round on Saturday with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
