Women's golf posts low round to take seventh at the Pinehurst Fall Challenge
Paige Gifford shot an even-par 72 to tie for the third-best score in JU history as the Dolphins finished seventh at the Pinehurst Fall Challenge on the No. 6 course.

Gifford’s 72 was part of the Dolphins round of 17-over par, 305, which is the ninth-best round in school history. It was the second even-par round of the season for Gifford and her best finish of the fall. JU finished the 36-hole event at 39-over par, 615.

The College of Charleston won the 15-team event at eight-over par, 584, finishing with a five-over par 293 in the final round. Jacksonville State’s Lucia Fernandez won the individual title at even-par, 144, with a two-over par 74 in the final round.

“Paige played exceptionally well today and her solid play spilled over to everyone else,” said JU assistant coach Pamela Shelley. “This was a good round to finish our fall season with as build some momentum for the spring.”

Francesca Yong shot the second-best round of the day for JU, carding a two-over par 74 to finish in a tie for 35th at 12-over par, 156. Meghan Hughes had a seven-over par 79 to finish in a tie for 21st at eight-over par, 152.

Melissa Magdor tied for 47th after her second straight 80 for a 36-hole total of 16-over par. Kristen Boettcher was tied for 57th after shooting an 81 in the final round to finish with at 20-over par, 164.

The Dolphins will open their 2010 spring season at home with the third annual JU Classic at the Hidden Hills Country Club.
