Women’s golf set to compete at the 2010 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship
The JU women’s golf team will wrap up its regular season starting Monday at the 2010 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship at the Venetian Bay Golf Course.

JU looks to break into the top three this season after finishing in fifth the last three seasons.

“We’ve been playing well of late against some very tough competition,” said JU head coach Mike Blackburn. “If we play with confidence, we can shoot some good scores on this course.”

The Dolphins lineup features the top five stroke averages on the team, led by senior Paige Gifford at 78.0. Gifford, who is returning to form after a leg injury held her out for most of the spring, shot two rounds in the 70s last week at the Canes & Cardinals Classic.

“It’s good to have Paige back at 100 percent,” Blackburn said. “She’s been very successful throughout her career and we expect her to end it on a high note this week.”

Joining her in the lineup will be a trio of juniors – Melissa Magdor, Kristen Boettcher and Meghan Hughes.

Magdor has been hot of late, finishing in the top 20 in her last two events. This spring, she has posted 10 rounds in the 70s, including an even-par 72 in the second round at the Eagles Landing Invitational, lowering her stroke average to 78.7 – the second best on the team.

In her last five rounds, Boettcher has been solid as well – carding five rounds in the 70s, including a season-low and school-record tying one-under par 71 in the final round of the Cincinnati Spring Invitational.

Hughes is looking to find her form that made her the Dolphins top player in the fall. Her best finish this spring is a tie for 16th at the JU Classic, but has shown signs of improved play the last two events.

Rounding out the lineup will be freshman Francesca Yong. Sporting a 79.52 stroke average, Yong has posted two top 20 finishes this season – including a tie for 19th at the Cincinnati Spring Invitational.

The Dolphins will tee off in the opening round on Monday at 9:20 a.m. with Florida Gulf Coast and Kennesaw State.
