Women’s lacrosse faces ambitious inaugural season

The JU women’s lacrosse program will not be pulling any punches in its inaugural season; The Dolphins will face four teams that finished last season with a Laxpower ranking of 40 or better. The season will open with a double-header with men’s lacrosse, as the women will face UMBC on Feb. 6.

“I think we’ve done a great job scheduling this year,” said head coach Mindy McCord. “When you start out with a new program, you have to get your name out there and play the best opponents possible and that’s exactly what we’ve done.”

The Dolphins will open their season with two home games, also welcoming second-year program Oregon to D.B. Milne Field on Feb. 13. After facing the Ducks, JU will travel to Gainesville, Fla. to face the Gators for the first installment of this yearly matchup.

The first National Lacrosse Conference matchup will come in the fourth game of the season against Detroit Mercy at Presbyterian on Feb. 27.

After the short road trip, the Dolphins will become very familiar with D.B. Milne Field on a six game home stand against Boston College (Mar. 2), St.Bonaventure (Mar. 6), Vermont (Mar. 10), Temple (Mar. 12), Long Island (Mar. 16), and conference opponent Howard (Mar. 27).

Four road games will meet the Dolphins after their home stand, with a trip to Louisville on Apr. 17 circled on its calendar. JU will face two conference opponents, Davidson (Apr. 10) and Longwood (Apr. 11), before heading to the Midwest to face the Cardinals and Cincinnati (Apr. 18).

The final game of the season will be another conference game at Presbyterian on Apr. 24 before diving into the NLC Tournament in Longwood, Va. (May 1-3).

The Dolphins will begin their fall season by heading down to Florida to take part in the UF Tournament with the Gators and Rollins College. Florida is also beginning their first year of varsity lacrosse, while Rollins finished 12-3 last year in NCAA Division II. All three teams will play two full exhibition games each.
