Women's lacrosse inks 12 during early signing period

The JU women’s lacrosse program has finalized its early recruits for the 2010-2011 season. The Dolphins netted 12 high school seniors during the early signing period.

“We’re really excited about our second class,” said head coach Mindy McCord. “We set ourselves an ambitious goal for recruiting and this class will continue to reach our program goals of winning a conference championship and moving our way up the Division I ranks.”

In this monthly installment leading up to the inaugural lacrosse game at JU, we put the spotlight on the class of 2014.

Morgan Basler – Midfield – Penn Yan, N.Y. (Penn Yan) - While starting five years under head coach Patty Queener, Basler tallied 34 goals, 32 assists and received first team all-league honors for the third year in a row during her junior season. During her sophomore season, Basler totaled 48 goals and 19 assists including an honorable mention for the All-Greater Rochester Team. Basler helped lead her team to two league championships and the New York State finals.

Jennifer Cosgrove – M/Attack – Stevensville, Md. (Kent Island) - While starting three years under head coach Rick Tubman, Cosgrove tallied 77 goals, 21 assists and received high school all-America honors during her junior campaign. During her sophomore year, Cosgrove broke the school record for most points scored with 86 goals and 26 assists while receiving Under Armour All-America and Inside Lacrosse “Top 25 Women: Rising Juniors” honors. While playing for Maryland United Lacrosse Club, Cosgrove helped lead her team to the 2009 Club National Championship finals.

Morgan Derner – A/M – Lake Mary, Fla. (Lake Mary) - While starting four years under head coach Carl Tipton, Derner scored 77 goals and added 45 assists while receiving Seminole County “Player of the Year” and first team all-state honors during her junior year. Derner has received first team all-district honors twice and is a two year captain. Derner has totaled 176 goals and 80 assists during her career.

Jessica Erdely – M/A – Cumming, Ga. (West Forsyth) - While starting two years under head coach Dan Kaplan, Erdely scored 67 goals, 32 assists and 63 ground balls during her junior season received all-county, academic all-America and second team all-state honors. While playing for Hotlanta, Erdely was named to the 2008 all-tournament team in the Heatwave Tournament.

Rachel Forman – Defense – Olney, Md. (Our Lady of Good Counsel) - Forman started one year under head coach Mike Haight and played with the club team Jackals.

Alexandra Hoffman – M/A – Annapolis, Md. (St. Mary’s) - While playing three years under head coach Megan Lewis, Hoffman received second team all-galaxy honors for both St. Mary’s and Chesapeake Club Lacrosse.

Sara Martin – D/M – Hampstead, Md. (North Carroll) - Martin started three years under head coach Rob Gonzales.

Brittney Orashen – M – Flemington, N.J. (Hunterdon Central) - While starting three years under head coach Marybeth Driscol, Orashen recorded 48 goals during her junior season. Orashen was also named “MVP” of the Hunterdon Warren Tournament.

Kaylee Quint – M – Lake Mary, Fla. (Lake Mary) - While starting three years under coaches Nicole Brown and Carl Tipton, Quint totaled 54 goals, 53 assists and 101 ground balls during her junior season which also included all-conference, all-central Florida and academic all-America honors. During her career, Quint has tallied 92 goals, 64 assists and three all-conference honors.

Angela Sperbeck – A/D/M – Leonardtown, Md. (St. Mary’s Ryken) - While starting three years for head coach Irene Tsapos, Sperbeck earned all-county honors during her junior season including an Under Armour “Under Classmen for D.C. Coaches” Award. Sperbeck also earned an honorable all-county mention during her sophomore year.

Kaitlin Stewart – M – Annapolis, Md. (St. Mary’s) - While starting two years under head coach Megan Lewis, Stewart scored six goals and 12 assists during her junior season. After transferring from Archbishop Spalding her freshman year, Stewart recorded 23 goals and 30 assists on St. Mary’s junior varsity team. Stewart has scored 56 goals and 56 assists during her club career with Maryland United and CC Lax Black.

Chelsea Watts – M – West Long Branch, N.J. (Shore Regional) - While starting four years under head coach George Moutis, Watts tallied 81 and 20 assists and earned first team all-division honors during her junior season. Watts helped lead her team to two state sectional championships and was ranked by Lacrosse Magazine as one of the top 25 high school women’s lacrosse players in the country. In her career, Watts has tallied 120 goals and 31 assists.
