Women’s lacrosse falls to UMBC in season opener, 18-2
The JU women’s lacrosse team left the field with their heads held high after an 18-2 defeat to UMBC in its program opener at D.B. Milne Field in front of an electric crowd of 1,043.
The Retrievers (1-0) were led by junior Erika Braerman, who netted four goals and two assists on six shots in the season opener. Junior Ashley Stodter recorded a hat trick and led the team with ten shots, six on goal.
Freshman Cassie Campasano scored the first of two goals for the Dolphins (0-1) on the afternoon. The second tally was netted with less than a minute to go in the contest by freshman Carly Garrison.
“Well it wasn’t the best way for us to start out but we know that we have great potential,” said JU head coach Mindy McCord. “We want to thank all of the incredible fans for coming out and supporting us on this historic day. We’re going to get ready for Oregon next weekend and see what we can do.”
The Dolphins recorded the first goal in program history when Campassano picked up a ground ball in front of the net around a host of Retrievers and fired a shot into the back of the net and was greeted by the entire Dolphins team.
Freshman Rachel Hannon took a great chance for the Dolphins at 34:35 from a tidy clear but her shot crashed off the iron. JU had trouble maintaining possession throughout the game, receiving four yellow cards and conceding three goals off the penalties with all three goals coming in the first ten minutes of the second half.
Braerman scored one of her four goals to lead the charge off a free position shot, sending the score to 10-1. Sophomore Alicia Krause and junior Kristen Milligan recorded the next two scores.
The Dolphins finished the day with 13 shots, six on goal while the Retrievers took 40 shots, landing 30 on the cage.
McCord will lead the Dolphins back onto the field next weekend at 11 a.m. when they face upstart Oregon at 11 a.m.
