Sophomore Clay Kollenbaum
Sophomore pitcher Clay Kollenbaum earned Atlantic Sun Conference “Pitcher of the Week” honors after doing his part to help shore up a Dolphin pitching staff that is in the midst of eight games in eight days.
JU went 2-1 for the week, with big wins over Wagner (18-8) and James Madison (13-5) after dropping a heartbreaker to Bethune-Cookman (4-3) to start the week.
Kollenbaum has been called upon for long relief and hasn’t disappointed in his second season with the program. He currently leads the squad with five appearances and 14 strikeouts while logging a team-best 11 innings among relievers.
Against the Wildcats, Kollenbaum put the Dolphins in line to win the contest by hurling two shutout innings in which he scattered two hits and struck out four batters. Against Seahawks, he put the shackles on a Wagner squad that had put up eight runs in the first four innings. Kollenbaum notched the first save of his career after tallying three shutout innings in which he scattered two hits and struck out four.
“Clay is a good young arm that we needed to step up for us with all of our injuries, “He has done a tremendous job out of the bullpen in the past two weeks and I expect that to continue. With his development and our pitchers coming back healthy, I like the way our staff is rounding out as we move forward.”
For the week, Kollenbaum was 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA and one save in two appearances while notching eight strikeouts and allowing only four hits in five innings.
