The Dolphins took a 2-0 lead in the first but that would be the last time they led in the contest as the JU baseball team dropped the first of a two-game series with USF, 14-7, Tuesday evening at Red McEwen Field.

JU (6-6), which is in the midst of eight games in eight days, pounded out seven runs on 12 hits but could not slow down a USF (3-9) offense which racked up 14 runs on 12 hits.

“We knew coming into this week that it was going to be rough stretch for us,” said JU head coach Terry Alexander. “With that said, it is not an excuse and we need to find a way to fight through and do what we need to do to win. Right now, we need to get some rest and be ready to battle.”

Sophomore Clay Kollenbaum (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing nine runs on eight hits with five walks and three strikeouts in four innings.

Teddy Kaufman (1-1) earned the win after allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits with three walks and four strikeouts in six innings.

Junior left fielder Esterlin Perozo led the Dolphins by going 3-for-5 with a double while senior first baseman Alex Martinez drove in three runs.

Steven Hunt led the Bulls by going 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and four RBI.

JU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Martinez hit a two-run single. Senior second baseman Chuck Opachich and Perozo each dropped a single into to center to lead off the game. On the next play, Opachich appeared to be picked off going for third but USF third baseman Jonathan Koscso’s throw back to second rolled into right field to allow both runners to advance a base. Martinez followed with a liner back up the middle to clear the bases.

The Bulls evened things up, 2-2, in the bottom of the second when Koscso hit a two-run double to right center with two outs.

USF took a 7-2 lead in the bottom of the third when Eric Sim hit an RBI single to center, Sean Buckley hit an RBI single back up the middle and Stephen Hunt hit a three-run homer down the right-field line.

The Bulls increased the margin to 8-2 in the bottom of the fourth when Ryan Lockwood drove in a run with a chop grounder to first.

USF made it 10-2 in the bottom of the fifth when a run scored on a balk and Koscso hit an RBI double to right center.

JU cut the margin to 10-4 in the top of the sixth when junior catcher Alex Swenson hit a two-run double. Martinez drew a walk to lead off the inning but was out at second on a fielder’s choice by junior designated hitter Kevin Lehane. Freshman right fielder Adam Brett Walker hit a single to center to put runners on first and second before Swenson cleared the bases with a drive into the left-field corner.

The Bulls added three more runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh.

JU made it 14-5 in the top of the eighth when Walker hit an RBI double down the right-field line.

The Dolphins added two more runs in the ninth when freshman center fielder Dan Gulbransen and Martinez each hit RBI ground outs to short.

The Dolphins will continue its series against USF on Wednesday at 4 p.m. The contest can be followed through Live Stats or through USF Video Steaming on JUDolphins.com.
