After going 0-3 in extra-inning games this season, the Dolphins got off the snide when senior first baseman Alex Martinez hit a two-run double and junior Chris Kaminski finished off four innings of shutout relief to lead the JU baseball team to a 3-1 win in 11 innings, Thursday evening at Melching Field.

JU (24-26, 13-11) took sole possession of sixth place in the conference standings off the heels of a stellar pitching performance by junior Matt Loosen.

SU (26-28, 13-12) sent the game to extras with a run in the seventh but the Hatters left a game-high 10 runners on base in the contest.

“We know the importance of this series,” said JU head coach Terry Alexander. “We have had guys who have had their backs against the wall before and they stepped up for us tonight. There is still a long way to go but this is a step in the right direction.”

With the score tied in the 11th, sophomore left fielder Jonathan Murphy drew a walk and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior shortstop Jamaal Hawkins. After freshman center fielder Dan Gulbransen was issued an intentional walk, Martinez ripped a ball off the left field wall to clear the bases.

Loosen got the no-decision despite allowing only one run on eight hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in seven innings. Kaminski (4-5) got the win after allowing only one walk in four innings of perfect relief.

Robbie Powell (2-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing two unearned runs on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 1.1 innings of relief. Jacob deGrom also got a no-decision after allowing only one run on five hits with two walks and nine strikeouts in 9.2 innings of work.

Martinez led the Dolphins offensively by going 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Freshman designated hitter Adam Brett Walker also contributed with a solo homer.

Nick Rickles and Spencer Theisen each finished with two hits to lead the Hatters.

JU took a 1-0 lead in the second when Walker hit a solo homer to right field for his team-leading 15th of the season.

The Hatters looked to even the contest in the bottom of the third with runners on first and second with two outs. Rittles pulled a single through the left side but sophomore left fielder Jonathan Murphy fielded the ball cleanly and gunned down Jeff Simpson at the plate to end the inning.

Stetson threatened again with the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the fourth but Loosen struck out deGrom and Robert Crews swinging before getting Simpson to fly out to left to end the inning.

The Hatters evened the contest, 1-1, in the bottom of the seventh when Theisen hit laced an RBI double down the first-base line.

In other conference action relating to JU, Mercer (15-10) helped the Dolphins’ cause by pounding Belmont (12-12), 15-8. Kennesaw State (11-14) kept themselves alive with a 5-4 rally win over ETSU (14-11).

The Dolphins and Hatters will conclude their series with a doubleheader on Friday at 3 p.m. The contest can be purchased through Hatter Vision or followed on live stats by logging onto
