Men’s soccer falls in exhibition action to Flagler, 2-1
The JU men’s soccer team didn’t end the exhibition season with the best foot forward as the Dolphins dropped a 2-1 decision to Flagler on Monday night in St. Augustine, Fla.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first half, the Saints tied the match with a goal from Mack Hough. Joseph Toby added the game-winner early into the second half, while goalie Matt Gilman held his former team in check by recoding two saves on nine shots to secure the win.
The Dolphins got their lone goal from senior midfielder Stefan Runeman, while junior forward Nedim Hrustic led the team with five shots, two on goal, to close out the preseason schedule.
“This was a setback tonight,” said JU head coach Mike Johnson. “We played well at times, but made mistakes that cost us the match. We have to fine tune our negatives from tonight and smooth them out in practice this week before we play Florida Atlantic. Overall, we have put this loss behind us because the regular season starts in less than a week.”
Runeman put the Dolphins ahead in the 12th-minute by scoring a goal on assist from newcomer Chris Helms.
The Saints bounced back in the 25th-minute when they tied the match on an unassisted score by Hough.
Less than 10-minutes into the second half, Conor Killeen delivered a pass which Toby pushed passed JU senior goalie Joey Sanchez to give the Saints a 2-1 advantage.
The Dolphins added nine of their match-high 13 shots in the second half, but couldn’t get any shots past Gilman to tie the score.
Sanchez finished the night with three saves on 10 shots for the Dolphins during the loss.
The Dolphins open the regular season on Monday, Sept. 1 against in-state rival Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton, Fla. at 4 p.m.
