Joey Sanchez earns Atlantic Sun Defensive “Player of the Week” honors
Senior goalie Joey Sanchez was named Atlantic Sun Defensive “Player of the Week” after helping the JU men’s soccer team to consecutive shutout wins over USC Upstate and East Tennessee State at home last week.
The Houston na tive helped the Dolphins jump from last in the conference standings to fifth place by posting eight saves in 135 minutes during the two matches. He has allowed only one goal in his last 230 minutes.
“It’s nice to see Joey get the honor this week,” said JU head coach Mike Johnson. “He is starting to find a groove in the final part of the conference schedule. If Joey and the backline can stay in sync, then we will be very strong defensively, and it will help us at secure a berth for the A-Sun tournament.”
Sanchez takes home the honor for the third time in his JU career and is the second Dolphin this season to earn a weekly award after senior midfielder Stefan Runeman received offensive accolades on Sept. 28.
The Dolphins start the final week of the regular season on Thursday against Mercer in Macon, Ga. at 7 p.m. They finish their schedule on Saturday in Buies Creek, N.C. against Campbell. Kickoff is also set for 7 p.m.
