Five Dolphins posted double figures to lead the JU women’s basketball team past Saint Leo, 89-47, in exhibition action at Swisher Gymnasium on Thursday night.

JU played well offensively in its first live action as they had every player register a score on the night. The Dolphins finished the game shooting 44.6 percent (29-65) from the floor, 58.3 percent (7-12) from beyond the arc and 75.0 percent (24-32) at the free throw line.

Saint Leo finished the night shooting 33.3 percent (18-54) and surrendered a game-high 30 turnovers in the contest.

“This was a great team win,” said JU head coach Jill Dunn. “We had point production in many areas. Most importantly, I was really impressed that we had good leadership and played pretty consistently for 40 minutes. This a good way to get us prepared for the season.”

The Dolphins only trailed once the entire evening (1, 17:50-1st half) and built a lead as high as 46 points in the second half (4:59).

Sophomore guard Ashanti Williams paced the Dolphins with 13 points, while senior guard Courtney Jackson and junior center Lynsey Paschal each finished with 12 points. Senior forward Desarae Johnson (11) and sophomore guard Valerie Jones (10) rounded out the double-digit scorers. Senior forward Crystal Grable finished with a team-high nine rebounds to go along with eight points and one assist.

The Lions were led by junior guard GeKeela Clemmons who finished with 12 points, while senior forward Dominique Daniels tallied nine points and eight boards.

In the first half, the teams traded baskets in the first four minutes before the Dolphins went on a 11-0 run to take a 16-6 advantage with a three pointer from Jackson (14:27). Junior guard Brittany Carannante cut the deficit to eight for the Lions on a pair of free throws at 13:43, but Grable got a put back and a pair of free throws on consecutive trips to cap off 10 straight points by the Dolphins for a 26-10 lead (7:18). The Dolphins continued to dominate offensively as they took a 22-point advantage (43-21) on consecutive three pointers from Jackson and Jones in the final minute of the half.

After halftime, the Dolphins stayed just as hot offensively after going on a 20-4 run in the first seven minutes of the second half for a 63-25 lead (12:58). Jackson was successful on a three-point play during the run at 17:29, while the Dolphins finished the stretch making eight of nine free throws.

Clemmons hit a three-pointer at 10:06 to make it a 70-29 contest to spark a small back and fourth run between the teams. The Dolphins reached the 80-point barrier (80-36) with a jumper by Williams at 5:40. Daniels closed out a 7-2 run in the final four minutes for the Lions with a jumper (2:41), while junior guard Gigi Thomas hit a three-pointer with less than 15 seconds remaining to close out JU’s scoring.

The Dolphins host Tampa on Sunday in their final exhibition tune up of the season at Swisher Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
