Friedlander medals at USRowing Club National Championships
After another successful season on the water, the JU rowing program is also enjoying success through the summer as advancing junior Kevin Friedlander earned a gold medal with the Men’s Intermediate Lightweight 8 and a bronze with the Men’s Intermediate Lightweight 4 for Penn A.C. Rowing Club at the USRowing Club National Championships on July 18 in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
“I really like to see our guys compete over the summer because it shows how much they like to train and race,” said JU director of rowing Jim Mitchell. “We don’t ask them to race during the summer break, but we have a few guys every year who race for their local clubs when they are away from Jacksonville. I am proud of Kevin, for not only getting in a boat every day during the summer, but also for racing at a high level. This will help him and his teammates this upcoming season.”
Friedlander, who will enter his third season with Dolphins this fall, sat in the three seat with the Intermediate LW 4 to help the squad to a third-place mark of 7:10.03 before rowing the two seat with the Intermediate LW 8 as the squad took home gold with a time of 6:09.98.
“It’s an honor to win such a prestigious race and represent JU rowing in such a positive way,” said Friedlander. “I’m really looking forward to continuing this success into this upcoming season.”
Friedlander was a member of the Junior Varsity 8 boat which tallied five medals in the spring including silver during the Ernie Bayer Trophy Grand Final at the Dad Vail Regatta. As a freshman, he won three gold medals at FIRA’s and silver at SIRA’s as a member of the Junior Varsity 8, Freshman 8 and Freshman 4.
