Men’s Varsity 8 edges No. 19 Temple to win Murphy Cup Final
The JU men’s rowing program made a major statement in the midst of the 2010 season as the Varsity 8 defeated a huge field, including No. 19 Temple, to win gold at the prestigious Murphy Cup Regatta on Saturday on the Schuylkill River.

Along with Temple, which was ranked No. 19 in the most recent USRowing Collegiate Coaches Poll, the men’s field also included Drexel, Fordham, Franklin and Marshall, LaSalle, Lafayette, Loyola, Rutgers Camden, St. Joseph’s, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Villanova, Washington College and Williams College.

“Our plan for the races was pretty simple, take care of business in the heat, qualify for the final and then go to work,” said JU head men’s coach Jim Mitchell. “I thought we raced a fantastic race in the final and implemented the race plan very well. The hard work the guys put in on the ergs and in the weight room over the winter showed, but we have to keep gaining speed. The attitudes of these guys are great, and they know that they must continue to learn and work. We will continue to have big tests every weekend for the next month.”

The Men’s Varsity 8 with coxswain Thomas Richards, Andy Davis, Dylan Kosten, Erich Negaard, Sebastian Kuhn, Isaac LaCount, Isaish LaCount, Tyler Humphrey and John Gerety won its initial heat with a time of 5:52.25, ahead of Drexel (5:57.67), Villanova (6:07.26), Washington College (6:15.82) and Rutgers Camden (6:58.01).

In the event final, the Dolphins took home gold by tallying a mark of 5:57.74 ahead of No. 19 Temple (6:01.45), Williams (6:07.60), Drexel (6:11.37), LaSalle (6:14.23) and Fordham (6:16.80).

The Women’s Varsity 8 with coxswain Jamie Goldstein, Jenna Manis, Danielle Fournier, Kelly Burke, Jillian Carmody, Jenna Barker, Mary Mosier, Emily Close and Marina Arishina finshed fourth in its initial heat with a mark of 6:52.15 behind Drexel (6:37.63), Colgate (6:40.77) and Fordham (6:41.00) but ahead of Lafayette (7:05.42).
