Men’s Varsity 8 earns invitation to IRA Regatta
In a highly successful season in which it was nominated for Row2K “Crew of the Week,” the JU men’s Varsity 8 has been selected to compete in the 108th Intercollegiate Rowing Championships (IRA) Regatta from June 3-5 on the Cooper River in Camden County, N.J.

The men’s Varsity 8, consisting of coxswain Tom Richards, Dylan Kosten, Eric Negaard, Issac LaCount, Isaiah LaCount, Sebastian Kuhn, Andy Davis, John Gerety and Tyler Humphrey, becomes the first JU Varsity 8 boat in program history to earn the right to compete in the oldest collegiate rowing championship in the United States.

“We are extremely honored and excited for the opportunity to race the best crews in the country at the IRA national championships,” said JU men’s head coach Jim Mitchell. “I am proud of our team and staff because we are paving new ground for this program which is already rich in history. We will be racing some really fast boats and we know we will be the underdog. Our goal is to go to this race, showcase our talent and show that we deserve to be there.”

The squad, which earned national acclaim for its victory over No. 19 Temple to claim the Murphy Cup on April 4, was one of 18 boats across the nation to be selected to compete in the event, joining Boston, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Northeastern, Oregon State, Princeton, Stanford, Syracuse, U.S. Naval Academy, California, Pennsylvania, Washington, Wisconsin and Yale.

The last JU boats to compete in the event was the Men’s Pair and Men's Varsity 4 at the end of the 1974 season.
