Women's lacrosse finding valuable experience in scrimmages
The JU women’s lacrosse team already has two scrimmages under its belt and is looking to gain more experience this weekend against Rollins College, Saturday at the Ashley Sports Complex.
In this monthly interview leading up to the first ever Division I lacrosse contest played at JU, we take a look at the importance of fall scrimmages for a brand new team and the benefits that accompany it.
“We learned a lot about ourselves this weekend,” said head coach Mindy McCord. “It was nice for our team to experience the speed of Division I lacrosse.”
Over the two games in Gainesville, Fla., the Dolphins were led in scoring by freshmen attackers Cassie Campasano (5) and Brie Kitchelt (4). Freshman midfielder Ellyn Spangenberg distributed the ball well all day, finishing with five assists while Campasano also added two to the tally.
“We were very nervous starting out play today,” said head coach Mindy McCord. “We worked as hard as we possibly could against Florida and, against Rollins, the team really showed me what they are capable of. It was a very positive weekend for us.”
Against Rollins, the Dolphins found themselves tied, 10-10, with 9:14 remaining in the second half and scored three straight goals to put the game away. Sophomore Sara Michel scored twice during the spell with freshman Alicia Esteban adding the third goal.
JU dominated draw controls throughout the game, doubling up the Tars, 18-9. Goalkeepers Tara Brock and Karli Tobin combined for nine saves in an entertaining game.
“The second half of the game was our best half of play all day,” said McCord. “We played back-to-back games and our fitness level was outstanding when it came to the end. I can’t say enough about our effort, intensity and tremendous positive attitude.”
Against Florida, the Dolphins committed costly turnovers in transition throughout the game and could not capitalize on draw controls (19-9).
Campasano led the team with three goals on four shots in the contest for a nervy Dolphin side.
