Women's lacrosse handles Howard, 20-5
The JU women’s lacrosse team won its third-straight game and third National Lacrosse Conference contest on Saturday with a 20-5 victory over Howard at the Ashley Sports Complex.
The Dolphins (5-6, 3-0 NLC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead before rattling off six unanswered goals to take control of the game early on a windy day in Jacksonville.
Freshmen Cassie Campasano and Jocelyn Jamison led JU’s offense with four goals and one assist apiece while sophomore Jessica Hotckiss added three points (1,2) to the effort. Goalie’s Karli Tobin and Hannah Collins each played thirty minutes, making four and six saves respectively.
The Lady Bison saw multi-goal games from Desiree Cox and Chasity Dailey while Amber Meeks recorded nine saves.
“We played so well today,” said JU head coach Mindy McCord. “We had a great week of practice and it showed. We limited turnovers hustled to every ground ball.”
The Dolphins opened up the contest with two goals within four minutes from Campasano and Brie Kitchelt.
After a Lady Bison goal, JU would score six unanswered starting with back-to-back scores from Sarah Michel. Jamison and Campasano would follow with assists from Ellyn Spangenberg and Hotchkiss respectively. The run would end with goals from Megan Lusby and Jamison before Howard netted two scores.
The Dolphins would head into halftime with a 14-4 advantage and in the middle of a nine-goal run; Two JU goals at the end of the first half were followed by seven more through 21 minutes in the second half
The second frame saw two goals from Campasano and Jamison, and scores from Amanda Hurley, Brie Kitchelt and Rachel Hannon as the Dolphins outscored the Lady Bison, 7-1.
JU outshot Howard, 36-18, in the contest and dominated on the ground, picking up 13 more ground balls than the visitors (36-23).
The Dolphins are back in action on April 10 when they face in-conference foe Davidson at 1 p.m. in Charlotte, N.C.
