Dolphins second day cut short due to storms
The JU football team must be doing something right.

The Dolphins have fortunately avoided the heat the past two days with overcast conditions, with a lightning storm in the area shutting down Saturday’s practice 30 minutes short of completion. Jacksonville was in helmets again and will move into pads tomorrow as they continue their five-day acclimation period.

“We’ve made a lot of progress these first two days, but it’s tough to lose time like we did today,” said JU head coach Kerwin Bell. “Our veterans know how important preseason camp is and their experience and leadership is helping our younger players get used to the rigors of camp.”

DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE: With a new defensive coordinator, the Jacksonville defense will have a new look and feel this season. The Dolphins will remain with their 4-3 setup, but coach Jerry Odom’s philosophy is built on the players making plays.

The strength of the defense entering camp is at linebacker. Senior Joseph Fennell is one of the top linebackers in the program history, joined by junior middle linebacker Layne McCombs and senior outside linebacker Will Perry.

“Our defense is going to be aggressive and attacking,” Odom said. “We’ve got a lot of playmakers on our side of the ball. My job, and the job of the rest of the defensive staff, is to put our guys in position to make plays.”

SCRIMMAGE SCHEDULE SET: The Dolphins will hold a scrimmage the final three Saturdays of training camp, starting Aug. 14. The first scrimmage will be held at Fletcher High School, starting at 1 p.m. The second will be on Aug. 21 at The Bolles School starting at 5 p.m. The final scrimmage will be on campus on Aug. 28 and will kickoff near 10 a.m.
