Dolphins dodge raindrops on Thursday afternoon
The JU football team was able to get its two-hour workout in on Thursday afternoon despite a large thunderstorm that hit the campus around lunchtime.
After a period of individual work and a period of work as a unit, the Dolphins got down to business with a period of live work with the offense facing the defense. The importance of the live periods is underscored by getting the young defensive players action against the first-team offense.
“We really got after it during the live session today,” said JU head coach Kerwin Bell. “It’s good to see our young guys on defense getting some live snaps against our first-string offense. When they face receivers like Josh (Philpart), Larry (Thompson) and Elliott (Finkley), it’s a learning experience for what a game is like.
“We’re going to be counting on our young guys a lot this year, so we’re trying to get them in as many game-like situations as possible.”
TWO-A-DAY PREPS FOR SCRIMMAGE: Friday’s two-a-day sessions will be important for the Dolphins as they lead up to the first preseason scrimmage on Saturday at Fletcher High School. Kickoff is set for Noon.
“These two practices are going to be important for everyone as we get into our gameday routine,” Bell said. “We want the guys to get after it and correct a lot of things before the scrimmage, which will be a great evaluator of where we are at this point.”
COMING TOMORROW: Look for a new “From the Press Box” on JUDolphins.com that will give you some things to watch for in Saturday’s first scrimmage. There will also be a new Friday Fast Fact on Rudell Small and an injury report of who is in and who is out for the first scrimmage.
THE TURF IS DOWN! The new AstroTurf playing surface at D.B. Milne Field is nearing completion as the logos have been installed this week. There are some great pictures of the finished work now on the construction blog that you can click here to see on JUDolphins.com. Once the turf is completed, construction on the new Ron Autrey Family Track will begin.
SCRIMMAGE SCHEDULE SET: The Dolphins will hold a scrimmage the final three Saturdays of training camp, starting Aug. 14.
The first scrimmage will be held at Fletcher High School, starting at 1 p.m. The second will be on Aug. 21 at The Bolles School starting at 5 p.m. The final scrimmage will be on campus on Aug. 28 and will kickoff near 10 a.m.
