JU announces 2011 football schedule
Once again, the Jacksonville University football team will take its schedule to a new level in 2011.
The Dolphins, having won two of the last three Pioneer Football League titles and finishing the 2010 season ranked in the top 25, will play an all-Football Championship Subdivision schedule for the first time in program history in 2011.
“After the success of last season and not getting a bid to the FCS playoffs, we wanted to make sure that this team had every opportunity to prove itself and earn a spot in the playoffs this season,” said JU director of athletics Alan Verlander. “Our non-conference schedule is going to be demanding and will give us a great opportunity to showcase our program on a national stage.”
Jacksonville opens the season at The Citadel, with a road trip to face FCS playoff participant Western Illinois before hosting Charleston Southern to round out the non-conference schedule.
“This year’s non-conference schedule is extremely difficult against three good scholarship programs,” said JU head coach Kerwin Bell. “On top of a tough non-conference schedule, the PFL continues to get better each year and this year is no different. Dayton is back on the schedule and we also have road trips to Drake and San Diego – which are two of the most difficult places to win at in the league.”
The Dolphins will play five games at home, starting with Charleston Southern on Sept. 17, followed by a three-game homestand starting with Dayton on Oct. 8, Morehead State on Oct. 15 and Davidson on Oct. 22. The game against Davidson will also serve as Homecoming. The final home game is set for Nov. 12 against Butler.
