The Dolphins ran into a one-man wrecking crew on the mound and at the plate as the JU baseball team managed only three hits in a 7-0 loss to Evansville, Tuesday evening at John Sessions Stadium.

JU (9-4) was blanked for the first time in 2011 as UE (5-5) got a career performance from Cody Fick – who not only went the distance on the hill but led the Purple Aces from the plate as well.

“We did not have a good effort tonight,” said JU head coach Terry Alexander. “I will tip my cap to Cody Fick because he earned it tonight. But I want to see us making more of an effort to try and make something happen. Our goal is to come back out tomorrow and show that we have some fight in us.”

Senior Matthew Tomshaw (0-1) was tagged with the loss despite allowing only two run on seven hits with a walk and four strikeouts through 5.2 innings of work.

Fick (2-0), who allowed only one runner to reach second base in the game, issued only two walks while striking out nine batters.

Senior right fielder Chris Connelly, junior shortstop Jimmy Howick and freshman third baseman Jimmy Appleby (double) each finished with a hit for JU.

Along with his work on the mound, Fick helped himself at the plate by going 3-for-5 with double, a triple and five RBI. Trentt Copeland, Ryan Oesterle and Ty Legan each finished with multiple hits for the Aces.

UE broke a scoreless tie in the sixth when Fick hit an RBI single to center and Oesterle laced an RBI double to right center.

The Aces added another run in the eighth when Fick hit an RBI double down the right-field line.

UE would tack on four more runs in the ninth, including a bases clearing triple to center by Fick.

JU and UE will conclude its two-game series on Wednesday at 6:30 pm. The contest can only be viewed through livestats by logging onto JUDolphins.com.
