For the second straight game, the Dolphins held an early advantage, lost the lead and had an opportunity to complete a comeback in the ninth but the rally also fell short once again as the JU baseball team fell to Lipscomb, 11-8, Sunday afternoon at John Sessions Stadium.

JU (14-10, 5-4) held an early 6-0 lead through five innings but LU (9-15, 2-4) scored three in the sixth, four in the seventh and four in the eighth to take the series.

In the ninth, the Dolphins had the bases loaded with two outs but a flare to left was caught in stride by M.L. Williams to end the game.

“There is no one way to point your finger in this loss,” said JU head coach Terry Alexander. “We may have given up a lot a runs late but our offense went four innings without scoring. We have a lot of self reflecting to do before we face a tough ball club on Tuesday.”

Freshman Adam Maxon (1-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing one run on one hit with a walk in 0.1 innings of relief. Senior Chris Kaminski got the no-decision after allowing three runs on nine hits with a walk and four strikeouts in 5.2 innings.

Mike Grace (2-0) got the win after allowing only two unearned runs on five hits with three strikeouts in 4.2 innings of relief. Richie Goodenow notched his first save by getting the final out of the contest. Dannie Strable got the no-decision despite allowing five runs on five hits with two walks and a strikeout in 2.2 innings.

Junior designated hitter Kevin Lehane led the Dolphin offense by going 3-for-5 with double and three RBI. Sophomore center fielder Dan Gulbransen (double) and sophomore first baseman Adam Brett Walker (two doubles) also finished with three hits. Senior catcher Alex Swenson also chipped in with multiple hits.

Bennett Smith led the Bisons by going 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI while Josh Chism went 2-for-3 with home run and five RBI. Kyle Henry also added three hits.

JU took a 5-0 lead in the third when Gulbransen hit an RBI double, senior right fielder Chris Connelly drove in a run after being hit by a pitch, Swenson drew a bases loaded walk and Lehane hit a two-run single to right.

The Dolphins added another run in the fourth when Walker hit an RBI double down the left-field line.

LU cut the deficit to 6-3 in the sixth when Smith hit a three-run homer to left center.

The Bisons took a 7-6 lead in the seventh when Tennyson Dodd hit an RBI double to left center, Chism hit a sacrifice fly to center, Smith hit an RBI single to center and Henry hit an RBI single to left.

LU increased the margin to 11-6 in the eighth when Chism hit a Grand Slam to left center.

JU would add two runs in the ninth when Swenson hit an RBI single to second and Lehane hit an RBI single to left.

The Dolphins will conclude its homestand against Georgia Southern on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The contest will be broadcast live on 1010XL with Joel Lamp calling all the action or fans can follow ASun.TV or live stats by logging onto
