Howick’s heroics lead baseball to an 11-10 rally win in the ninth over Campbell
It may have taken a while but it was definitely worth the wait as junior designated hitter Jimmy Howick’s walk-off two run single with two out in the ninth competed a Dolphin comeback as the JU baseball team rallied for an 11-10 win over Campbell in the series opener, Friday afternoon at John Sessions Stadium.
JU (21-13, 11-5), which never led in the contest, trailed 10-8 in the bottom of the ninth before using five base hits to pull off its second rally win in 2011.
CU (15-23, 2-14) had a 4-0 lead in the top of the fourth, a 6-3 advantage in the top of the sixth and a 9-6 lead in the top of the eighth before finally giving up a 10-8 cushion in the top of the ninth.
In the ninth, freshman shortstop Chris Moye led off the inning with a chop base hit past the mound before being pinch-run for by freshman Taylor Ratliff. Senior right fielder Esterlin Perozo followed with a single up the middle to put runners on first and second.
After a pop bunt to the pitcher for the first out, sophomore center fielder Dan Gulbransen cut the lead to 10-9 with an RBI single to left. After an intentional walk to sophomore first baseman Adam Brett Walker and a strike out with the bases loaded, Howick hit a 1-0 pitch back up the middle to plate the final two runs.
“This was an extremely important win for us,” said JU head coach Terry Alexander. “Campbell really came out strong and for us to come back like we did was a great thing to be a part of. I keep telling our guys that we are in any ballgame no matter what and tonight we finally got to see it happen. Hopefully, this will be a spark for us as we try to battle for another series win tomorrow.”

Jake Smith (2-2) was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs on three hits with two walks in one inning of work.
