Dolphins wrap up regular season at Stetson
After falling to Florida Gulf Coast on a buzzer beater, the JU men’s basketball team looks to rebound on Saturday in the regular season finale against Stetson.
On the line for JU (19-9, 13-6 A-Sun) is the first 20-win regular season since the 1972-73 campaign and the first back-to-back 20-win seasons since 1974. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Edmunds Center, with the game being broadcast on 1010XL with Barry Milligan and Artis Gilmore calling the action.
For the Dolphins to do that, they have to beat a Stetson (7-23, 5-13) team that will playing its final game of the season and its last under head coach Derek Waugh.
“Our focus is on correcting the mistakes we made and preparing for what will be a tough game against Stetson,” said JU head coach Cliff Warren.
For Jacksonville, Thursday’s game is the eighth outing this season that has been decided by five points or less – with JU coming out on top five times. The buzzer beating loss was the Dolphins first at the final horn since the controversial loss at home to Mercer on Jan. 2, 2010.
One of the areas for improvement will be JU’s offense. The Dolphins entered the FGCU game having scored at least 74 points in their last three games, but were held to a paltry 55 points, with 21 of that coming off the bench.
The bench’s play in the second half was the bright spot for JU. Freshmen Aloys Cabell and Keith McDougald combined to score 17 points, connecting on four 3-pointers, with McDougald hitting what looked like the game-winner for JU with 9.2 seconds left in regulation.
A-SUN TOURNAMENT UPDATE: The Dolphins first round matchup in the General Shale Brick A-Sun Tournament has been determined. The third-seeded Dolphins will face sixth-seeded UNF at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday. It is the second straight year the two teams will face in the first round of the A-Sun championship event.
