Women's tennis opens the season with a 6-1 win over Florida A&M

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU women's tennis team opened its 2008 campaign with an impressive 6-1 win over Florida A&M on Sunday at the Keith Watson Family Tennis Complex.

JU (1-0) won the doubles point by sweeping all three matches and took five of the six singles points, winning at Nos. 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. The only loss of the match was by Lena Willi at No. 1 singles, snapping her streak of 15 straight wins.

Tatiana Soldatova opened the season with a win at the No. 2 position to extend her winning streak to nine.

"This was a good start for us," said JU head coach Shane Wood. "There is room for improvement, but I am pleased with how we performed."

Lina Xu won at No. 3 in her first match as a Dolphin, 6-2, 6-1. Iva Jaresova picked a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 4 position. Fernanda Carrero took care of business in the No. 5 match, winning 6-0, 6-0.

Transfer Juliana Umeki took a 6-2, 6-0 win in the No. 6 match.

In doubles, Soldatova and Jarasova won the No. 1 match, 8-4. Willi and Carrero teamed up for an 8-4 win in the No. 2 match while Umeki and Xu racked up an 8-0 win in the No. 3 match.

The Dolphins return to the court on Wednesday at Georgia Southern. First serve is set for 2:30 p.m.
