Women's tennis gets 4-3 win at Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. - - With a sweep of the three doubles matches and three singles win, the JU women's tennis team won its second straight match to open the season, 4-3, over Georgia Southern on Wednesday.

"We played well in doubles and well enough in singles to win the match," said JU head coach Shane Wood. "It was good for us to go on the road and get the experience of having to win a tight match."

JU (2-0) opened the match with an impressive sweep in doubles. Tatiana Soldatova and Iva Jaresova took an 8-5 win in the No. 1 match, with Lena Willi and Fernanda Carrero picking up an 8-2 win in the No. 2 match. Lina Xu and Juliana Umeki completed the sweep with an 8-5 win in the No. 3 match.

The two teams split the six singles matches. Xu got a 7-5, 6-3 win in the No. 3 match to get the scoring started for JU. Carrero kept the momentum going with a 6-3, 6-2 win in the No. 5 match with Umeki closing out the match with a 7-6, 6-3 win in the No. 6 match.

Willi dropped the No. 1 match, 6-2, 6-4, her second straight loss to open the season. Soldatova saw her nine-match winning streak snapped in a three-set battle after winning the first set, 6-4, she dropped the final two, 3-6, 2-6. Jaresova dropped the No. 4 match, 6-3, 6-4.

The Dolphins are back in action again on Sunday as they face Rice at the Keith Watson Tennis Complex. First serve is set for Noon.
