Women's Tennis goes 2-1, over the week

FT. MYERS, Fla. - The JU women's tennis team went 2-1, last week with wins over East Tennessee State (5-2) and Florida Gulf Coast (6-1), while suffering one loss to USC Upstate (5-2) to move into second place in the Atlantic Sun Conference.

Dolphins No. 2 Lena Willi won all three of her matches over the week, defeating East Tennessee State's Tara Byrne in three sets (7-5, 2-6, 11-9), USC Upstate's Susanna Hernandez (6-2, 6-1) and Florida Gulf Coast's Maria Braniecka (6-0, 6-2).

"It was a really positive week for our team," said JU head coach Shane Wood. "We have always found a way to bounce back and right the ship. Our No. 2 and No. 3 singles players are playing really well and having a hard time finding players to challenge them. They are playing really good tennis and are really focused."

The Dolphins took the doubles point against ETSU, with Willi and Fernanda Carrero defeating Tara Byrne and Elena Volobueva (8-6), in the No. 2 matchup, while the No. 3 team of Lina Xu and Juliana Umeki defeated Andra Voinea and Vita Moskaciova (8-3). The No. 1 pairing of Tatiana Soldatova and Iva Jaresova lost (8-4) to Yevgeniya Stupak and Olya Batsula.

No. 1, Xu defeated the national ranked Stupak in singles play (6-4, 7-5) while No. 2 Willi, No. 4 Umeki, and No. 6 Carrero also had convincing victories over Byrne, Volobueva and Moskaliova, respectively.

Lady Bucs' No. 3 Batsula defeated Soldatova in three sets while Voinea defeated Jaresova in the No. 5 matchup, to gain ETSU their only two points.

The Dolphins fell to USC Upstate, 5-2, with Willi and Soldatova taking their singles matches. Soldatova also teamed up with Jaresova to win the No. 1 doubles match over Anna Novo and Emilia Milovanovic.

In their first away match of the week in Ft. Myers, Fla., the Dolphins defeated Florida Gulf Coast, 6-1.

The Dolphins won the doubles point even though the No. 1 team of Soldatova and Jaresova fell to Maria Braniecka and Jordan Vaughan (8-6).

The No. 2 team of Willi and Carrero defeated Maria Maggiorini and Lauren Pfeiffer (8-3) and the No. 3 pairing of Xu and Umeki defeated Brett Kinley and Leah Johnson (8-1).

No. 2 Willi defeated Braniecka (6-0, 6-2), No. 3 Soldatova bested Pfeiffer (6-1, 6-2) and No. 4 Umeki defeated Vaughan (7-6, 6-3).

No. 5 Jaresova picked up a win over Johnson (7-6, 7-5) and No. 6 Carrero defeated Kinley in three sets (2-6, 6-4, 7-6).

Xu took the only singles loss for the Dolphins, going down in three sets (6-4, 4-6, 7-6) in the No. 1 matchup to Maggiorini.

The Dolphins will be back in action on Friday, traveling to Kennesaw, Ga. to take on Kennesaw State at 3 p.m.
