April 19, 2008

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - It took awhile, but the JU women's team shutout Campbell 4-0 to advance the Atlantic Sun Conference championship match for the second straight season.

The match was delayed by rain and took more than five hours to complete as they dodged the rain drops before the final result.

"I'm really proud of how focused the girls stayed throughout everything," said JU head coach Shane Wood. "They knew what was on the line today and stepped up their game."

Now, the Dolphins are just one final win away from advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year.

"It's great to be in the finals, but we know that we haven't accomplished anything yet," Wood said. "We've still got a lot of work to do tomorrow to reach our goal of winning the tournament title."

JU opened the match by winning the doubles point. The Dolphins opened quickly as Lena Willi and Fernanda Carrero teamed up for an 8-1 win in the No. 2 match followed by Iva Jaresova and Tatiana Soldatova taking the No. 1 match, 8-3.

In singles play, the Dolphins rolled quickly in the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 matches. Lina Xu was the first off the court with a 6-1, 6-0 win in the No. 1 match. Lena Willi was right behind her with a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 2 match.

Tatiana Soldatova clinched the final point with a 6-2, 6-1 win in the No. 3 match to send the Dolphins to the finals.

JU will face the winner of the ETSU-Stetson match on Sunday at 1p.m.
