Women's tennis wants more out of NCAA trip

May 5, 2008

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A year ago, the JU women's tennis team made its first postseason appearance.

Now, the Dolphins return to the biggest stage in college tennis for another shot at glory and being satisfied with being in the field isn't an option.

Jacksonville (20-5) faces sixth-ranked Florida in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday in Gainesville, Fla. The two teams faced off in the first round last season, with the Gators advancing with an impressive 4-0 win.

"The girls are committed to the task at hand and giving their best against a talented Florida team," said JU head coach Shane Wood. "Everyone that went last year wants more out of this trip than we did last year."

The Dolphins are hot entering the tournament, having won nine matches in a row, with the last three coming in the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament as JU defended its title.

JU's No. 1 and 2 players enter the match on high notes as well. Lina Xu has won eight in a row at the No. 1 position, with Lena Willi having won 11 in a row as she completed her second straight undefeated season in A-Sun play.

"We're going to need everyone to playing at the top of their game against Florida, but Lina Xu and Lena Willi have been solid for us all season," Wood said. "They are both playing well and have the ability to play with anyone in the country."

First serve in the doubles point is set for 6 p.m. The six singles matches will follow upon its conclusion.
