Men’s rowing to compete in 73nd annual Dad Vail Regatta
Now in the final stanza of the 2011 season, the JU men’s rowing team will send three boats to compete in the prestigious Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta this Friday & Saturday, on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pa.

The newest twist in technology for the event will be live streaming of all races on Friday and Saturday ( with Saturday’s final available on ESPN3 beginning at 1 p.m.

The Men’s Varsity 8, Men’s Freshman 4 and Men’s Junior Varsity 8 will compete in the 73nd annual regatta, which features more than 120 colleges and 3,300 rowers from the United States and Canada.

The event will showcase 498 events and 19 different race categories with qualifying heats on Friday. Schools that qualify in the initial races will move on to semifinal heats on Saturday, with the event finals being held late Saturday.

The Men’s Varsity 8 with coxswain Andrew Soloway, Dylan Kosten, Andy Davis, Scott Del Vecchio, Brian Cosmillo, Greg VanOekel, Kevin Friedlander, Brad Miller and Richard Kelly will kick things off on Friday at 10:35 a.m. in the sixth preliminary heat against Lehigh, Ohio State, Drexel, Vermont and Rhode Island. The top two finishers from five heats will automatically qualify for the three semifinals on Saturday (10:30-10:40 a.m.). All other finishers not placing last will move on to three Repecharge Heats on Friday (3:19-3:29 p.m.), in which the top two finishers will also move on to the Saturday semifinals. The top two finishers from each semifinal will then compete for the Aberdeen Trophy in the Final at 4:33 p.m. The rest of the semifinal participants will compete in the Second Final at 4:23 p.m.

The Men’s Freshman 4 consisting of coxswain Jessica Mellinger, Andrew Manchester, Shane Kennedy, Troy Troupe and Sean Carney will race on Friday at 1:13 p.m. in the fourth preliminary heat against Michigan State, Duquesne, Emory and Binghamton. The top three finishers from nine heats will move on to the Saturday semifinals (7:18-7:30 a.m.). The top two finishers from each semifinal will then compete for the Lindy Cup in the Final at 1:53 p.m.

The Men’s Junior Varsity 8 made up of coxswain Tom Richards, Chris Ottie, Matt Outlaw, John Gerety, Bernard Vingilis, Preston Weinard, Parker Lawler, Brian Tye and Jared Low will go at 4:48 p.m. in the second initial heat against Marist, Grand Valley, Virginia, Army and Saint Josephs. The top four finishers from each heat will move on to Saturday’s semifinals (10:05-10:15 a.m.). The top three finishers from each semifinal will compete for the Ernie Bayer Trophy at 2:53 p.m.
