Women’s golf in 14th after opening round of the Xavier Invitational
The JU women’s golf team struggled in the opening round of the Xavier Invitational, shooting a season-high 341 and sits in 14th place after the first round.

Morgan Jackson led the Dolphins with an eight-over par 80 on the par-72 Legends course at LPGA International.

Montana leads the 14-team event after shooting an 11-over par, 299, holding a six-shot lead over Campbell and Daytona State. Daytona State’s Mitsuki Katahira leads the individual competition after posting a three-under par, 69.

“We didn’t get off to a good start and it snowballed on us today,” said JU assistant coach Jen Poth. “We’re going to put this behind us and start all over tomorrow.”

Jackson opened with a four-over par, 40, on the front nine and equaled it on the back nine to tie for 38th place.

Kristen Boettcher carded a season-high 11-over par, 83, to tie for 53rd. She made the turn at three-over par, but struggled on the back nine, going eight-over par.

Melissa Magdor tied for 71st after shooting an 87, that closed with a five-over par 41 on the back nine.

Meghan Hughes and Jessica Williams each carded a 91 to tie for 76th.

The Dolphins will tee off at 9:10 a.m. with McNeese State in the second round.
