Women’s soccer kicks off A-Sun play at home this weekend
With four weekends of non-conference action in the books for the JU women’s soccer team it’s time for the games to start counting this weekend as the Dolphins begin conference play against Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson.
The Dolphins (4-3-1), picked in a tie for fourth with Mercer in the A-Sun preseason poll, wrapped up the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 3-0 win over Francis Marion on Sunday afternoon as JU produced three separate goal scorers in the game. Two nights before, the Dolphins drew with BIG EAST opponent USF, 1-1, in a thriller at the Ashley Sports Complex.
“We’re excited to have finally gotten to the conference part of our schedule,” said JU head coach Brian Copham. “We’ve played well out of conference and have definitely found some positives to take into this weekend.”
Last weekend, the Eagles (3-4) opened the Black Knights Classic at West Point with a 2-0 victory over Vermont before falling to Marist, 1-0, on Sunday.
Jenci Villaverde currently leads the Eagles with seven points on two goals and three assists in the first seven games of her collegiate career while Jessica Swartzentruber and Katie Donnellan each have four points. Goalie Stephanie Powers has logged more than 600 minutes between the pipes and has a 1.03 goals against average.
The Hatters (3-5) are coming off a split weekend, beating Southeast Missouri State, 3-2, but falling to Arkansas-Little Rock, 4-2. Tessa Gavilsky tops the Stetson points list with 10 (3 goals, 4 assists) while Courtney Janista sits behind her with eight points (4,0). Goalie Andrea Garavaglia has played every minute for the Hatters and has a 3.67 GAA.
The Dolphins will start the weekend off against the Eagles at 7 p.m. on Friday night and will close out against the Hatters on Sunday at 2 p.m. Both matches will be available through live video streaming at JUDolphins.com
