Women’s soccer falls to Mercer, 1-0
Despite putting nine shots on goal, the JU women’s soccer team fell to Mercer, 1-0, on a second-half goal on a muggy day at Bear Field.
The Dolphins (6-4-1, 2-1-1 A-Sun) outshot the Bears (4-6-1, 3-1-0), 14-11, with a 9-2 advantage on goal, but were unable to finish any of their chances.
“This was not how we wanted to end the weekend,” said JU head coach Brian Copham. “We played hard and well but we have some fine tuning to do on the execution side of things. We have to find a way to win when we outplay a team like today.”
The first half saw goalless action both ways as the Dolphins forced six saves from Mercer goalie Cagney Valloch. The Bears were unable to put a single shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes.
A set piece in the second half from midfield proved to be the spoiler for the Dolphins as Raschelle Riley served the ball up and Kacie Hudson put her shot away to give the Bears the lead.
The goal marked the end of junior goalie Alexa Rooney’s goalless streak, ending her run at 413 minutes. Leading the Dolphins was junior midfielder Jessica Hurtado, taking four shots, two on target. Eleven players for JU took a shot in the contest while eight put an effort on target.
Today’s loss to Mercer snapped JU’s six match unbeaten streak that saw the Dolphins go 4-0-2.
The Dolphins will return home this weekend, where they are unbeaten on the season, when they welcome USC Upstate on Friday and East Tennessee State on Sunday.
