Volleyball falls to Dartmouth, 3-0, in first match of Sacred Heart University Tournament
It was another rough start for the Dolphins in their second weekend of action as the JU volleyball team fell to Dartmouth, 3-0 (15-25, 17-25, 17-25), Friday afternoon in the Sacred Heart University Tournament at the Pitt Center.

JU (1-3) hit a match-low .019 in the contest as the Dolphins did not have a player record double-digit kills for the third time in four matches.

DU (1-0) did not show any affects of playing its first match of the 2010 campaign by hitting .263 while also tallying a match-high seven blocks.

“This is obviously not the start we were looking for after a good week of practice,” said JU head coach Shaun Kupferberg. “We don’t have much time to think about it with another match coming up and that may be beneficial to us with such a young squad. We have to try and regroup and keep playing until things start to click for us.”

Senior outside hitter Brittany Lehman led the Dolphins with eight kills while junior outside hitter Kathryn Kane and freshman outside hitter Taylor Nyquist each added six kills. Freshman middle blocker Alyssa Robertson led the defense with a match-high three blocks while junior libero Ashley August chipped in with 10 digs.

Madeline Baird led the Big Green with a match-high 10 kills, a .400 (10-2-20) hitting percentage and nine digs. Meghan Cooney also added nine kills while Kendall Houston chipped in with 26 assists and seven digs.

In the first set, DU jumped out to a 7-2 lead on an ace by Annie Villanueva and then increased the lead to 11-4 with an ace by Baird. The Dolphins cut the margin to 12-7 after an attack error by Houston but the Big Green answered back with a 3-1 run to push the advantage to 15-8 on an ace by Jessie Hartman. After a kill by Kane and an attack error by Kelsey Johnson made it 15-10, DU rattled off a 3-0 run to make it 18-10 on a kill by Baird. Both teams would trade point the rest of the way until a kill by Cooney gave DU a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second frame, JU jumped out to a 5-1 lead after a block by Robertson and Kane but DU would use a 4-0 run to even the score, 7-7, on a block by Kelsey Johnson. Both teams would go through one more tie until the Big Green used a 3-0 run to open up an 11-8 advantage on an attack error by the Dolphins. DU increased the margin to 16-10 on a kill by Baird but the Dolphins used a 4-2 run, capped by a kill by Kane, cut the deficit to 18-14. Both teams would trade points the rest of the way until a kill by Baird gave DU a 2-0 advantage heading into the break.

In the third set, the Dolphins opened with a 3-1 lead on a kill by Robertson and then increased the lead to 5-2 on an ace by freshman setter Kendall Courtney. Both teams would trade points until DU used a 9-1 run to take a 14-9 advantage on a kill by Houston. Both teams would trade points again until the Big Green used a 5-0 run to make it 19-12 on a block by Elisa Scudder. Both teams would trade points the rest of the way until a service error by JU ended the match.
