Tobbias Hottner receives A-Sun preseason all-conference honors
Junior defender Tobbias Hottner is one of the top returners for the JU men’s soccer team in 2010 and was recognized as such after receiving Atlantic Sun Conference preseason all-conference honors.

Last season, Hottner started in 15 matches on the backline after transferring from Virginia Tech and helped the Dolphins to shutout victories against St. Joseph’s (9/20) and ETSU (10/15). Hottner also recorded a pair of shots in JU’s wins against College of Charleston (9/27), FGCU (10/4) and USC Upstate (10/23).

“We are happy for Tobbias,” said JU head coach Mike Johnson. “He was one of our bright spots last year down the stretch and he is very deserving of this honor. We expect him to have a good season as well as a few more players so we can have several Dolphins on the postseason all-conference lists.”

For the first time in three years, the Dolphins were not picked in the top three spots in the preseason polls as JU was voted sixth in this season’s rankings

Stetson, who won the conference tournament in 2009, took the top spot with 94 points (including six first-place votes), while also being picked to win the tournament again with seven votes. Campbell was selected second with 78 points and a pair of first place votes, while FGCU (77), ETSU (66) and Mercer (65) made up the rest of the top five. JU, Lipscomb, North Florida, Belmont and USC Upstate rounded out the rest of the poll.

“This is a good gauge for us,” said Johnson. “After the year we had in 2009, I didn’t expect us to be picked very well. It’s nice not to have the bulls eye on our backs for once. Overall, our team wants to prove last year was a fluke and that begins on Sept. 1.”

The Dolphins will travel to Tampa, Fla. tomorrow to play USF in an exhibition match at 7:30 p.m.
