Dolphins looking for consistency and progress in second scrimmage
The JU football team wrapped up preseason camp on Friday in preparation for Saturday’s scrimmage at The Bolles School.

The Dolphins are looking to build off of the progress of this week’s practice after some bright spots on both sides of the ball in the first scrimmage.

“We’re looking to get some more consistency and build some drives this week,” said JU head coach Kerwin Bell. “We’ve had a great week of practice, especially with a lot of guys nursing injuries. But we also need a really productive scrimmage to make sure we’re progressing for the season opener.”

While the offense will be looking to build some drives, the defense will ramp up the pressure in hopes of creating more turnovers.

“We’ve been preaching that all during camp,” said defensive coordinator Jerry Odom. “We want our guys to be aggressive and attack the ball. We did a pretty good job of that last week and we’re making strides each day.”

PRACTICE REPORT: The Dolphins had their final practice of preseason camp on Friday afternoon, going for about 90 minutes in preparation of Saturday’s scrimmage. Classes start at JU next week and the team will go into its regular game-week schedule.

“We’ve had a really good camp and the guys have really battled,” Bell said. “We’re pleased with where we are right now, but we know we’ve got a long way to go before the opener.”

SCRIMMAGE SCHEDULE SET: The Dolphins will hold their second scrimmage of training camp at The Bolles School on Saturday, Aug. 21, starting at 5 p.m. The second scrimmage is used more as a simulation of the timeline for the season opener at Old Dominion as well as getting used to playing in the fading sunlight.

The final scrimmage will be on campus on Aug. 28 and will kickoff near 10 a.m., starting “Dolphin Day.” Fans are encouraged to come out and take in the final preseason scrimmage and meet some of the Dolphins from the other sports. There will also be prizes and giveaways throughout the day. Admission is free.
